Electric Mobility Scooters Empowering People with Mobility Issues

These are the lifeline to freedom of those who need them. It has not only helped people with disability but has also reduced the dependence on care givers offering physical assistance and therefore it is a win-win for all.

Mobility scooters features a seat, handlebars in the front and a flat area for the fleet. We can also say that these are advanced version of wheelchairs but configured like a motor scooter. Most of the models available in the market are light in weight and can be easily drove by people for whom these are designed. The first mobility vehicle was introduced in 1954 as an electric wheelchair. Since then, there has been a constant innovation and modification in the technology, appearance of the scooter and benefits offered to the user.

Usually comes in various types, these scooters can be broadly classified in three categories:

  • Small, light-weight scooters designed mainly to move indoor. These are portable and can be folded or disassembled in smaller parts.
  • Large, heavy-duty scooters to move outdoor.
  • Mid-range scooters which can be used both indoor and outdoor.

How does an Electric Mobility Scooter Works? When the user presses the throttle, it sends signal to the battery to release power and the power is transmitted to the motor through the wires. An important point to remember is that mobility scooters can go in reverse and can only move forward through the throttle.

While these scooters are a boon to physically impaired people and elders in so many ways, there still exist some limitations and disadvantages of using them.

  • Limited capacity of the battery: One of the prominent limitations are limited capacity of the battery which restricts user to go for lengthy journey. One has to be really careful about the length of the trip so that they do not run out of the battery.
  • Rough Terrain: While a heavy-duty scooter is designed to move outdoor on most of the surfaces, but there will still be places where it can not move smoothly.
  • Weather Challenges: Mobility scooters are not designed for extreme weather conditions like heavy rains, snow or cold. Using a scooter in these types of weather conditions can result in accidents and may even damage the scooter.
  • Restrictions with physical disabilities: Although these scooters are battery operated, it still requires upright posture, shoulder and hand strength and thus restricting people with upper body disability.
  • Safety Concerns: While these scooters are quite safe and appropriate to use, there are still some safety concerns while using them. High speed and not knowing about the surroundings can result in an accident-causing injury to the user.

Despite of these hurdles and challenges, Electric Mobility Scooter still is an invaluable innovation helping millions of physically disabled people around the world. It has been a complete game-changer by offering independence, confidence and freedom to navigate through the limitations of their life. By working on improving the technology, infrastructure and raising the awareness, we can build a world which is more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
